Bird Health - Ideal Diet

Ideal bird diet is one, which provides vitamins, proteins and essential nutrients in required proportion. Many of the problems such as poor health, poor fertility and decreased life span can be related to poor nutrition. Improper nutrition can leave the bird susceptible to many diseases and result in overall poor performance and lack of vitality. Natural supplements are preferred, but certain commercial formulated diets are also good ones.

Bird feeding
Formulated diets are readily available from many reputable manufacturers, pet stores, and veterinarians. The food is a blend of grains, seeds, vegetables, fruits, and various types of proteins, as well as additional vitamins and minerals. The ingredients are mixed and then baked. The food may be in the form of pellets, crumbles, or nuggets. Unlike a seed mixture, the bird cannot select particular components out of a formulated diet, so nutritional imbalances are much less likely to occur. There are commercial foods for different species, so be sure to select one appropriate for your bird.

Bird dietCertain kinds of nuts make better treats than sunflower or safflower seeds or peanuts. Think of them as the avian equivalent of dog biscuits. Almonds and pine nuts, in moderation, are highest in quality and actually can be beneficial. Give your bird seeds in small amounts as treats. They should be shiny (not dusty) and free of mold, fungus and insects. The same goes for nuts - give them only as treats. Since birds are much more passive in slavery than they are in the wild, they don't need as much fat in their diets. Seeds and nuts are high in fat, so give them to your bird only in moderation. Your bird should have fresh water every day. Don't add supplements unless your veterinarian tells you to; they can be a medium for bacteria to grow and can cause a bird to turn up his nose at his water bowl, leading to decreased water intake and kidney damage.

Never feed your bird the following.

Alcohol: As in humans, alcohol causes liver disease and can be toxic to the point of death.
Avocado, including guacamole, is deadly to some birds.
Chocolate is toxic to many animals, birds included.
