| Cat
health can be maintained by adopting precautionary methods and regular vet
consultation. Cats are most commonly affected by feline enteritis a fatal disease.
Due to this disease cats get attacks of vomiting and diarrhea, and can die within
3 days, cat flu is caused by two viruses called feline calicivirus and feline
herpesvirus. It is less fatal but is highly infectious to other cats and can cause
permanent damage to the cat's sinuses. Feline leukemia suppresses the immune system
and causes leukemia and cancers of the glands. It is one of the most common causes
of death in young cats. A course of vaccination and proper hygienic health
care is the right precautionary method to protect cats from viruses. The
adult cat can get roundworms and tapeworms. Cats should be treated regularly for
worms for health and hygiene reasons. Unlike dogs, cat worms do not infect humans.
However some cats can carry a microscopic parasite called toxoplasma which could
be harmful to pregnant women. Cats usually get infected by eating raw meat or
hunting and pass the cysts in their faeces. If there is a chance you might be
pregnant, you should avoid cleaning out the cat litter tray or, if necessary,
wear gloves. Worming cats every 6 months, if your cat hunts for a mice
then it should be wormed every three months. Fleas
occur in even the best kept households, so check your cat regularly. The main
flea found on all dogs and cats is actually the cat flea. Dogs usually scratch
a lot when infested with fleas, but a cat with fleas often shows subtler signs
such as licking and grooming more than usual. Apart from causing irritation to
your cat, flea control is also important for two other reasons: fleas carry a
tapeworm that can infect cats and dogs many cats are allergic to fleas Various
flea control products are available such as flea powders, flea sprays, flea pills
etc. Flea control products available with your vet are always the best
and have a long lasting effect.
